Gonville & Caius College - Great Gates
Description
Following a fortunate string of events that prevented the original heavy iron gates being tossed onto the scrap heap, Rattee & Kett were asked to re-install them in their location at the head of Kings Parade, Cambridge. The gates were originally removed during minor re-modeling of the Waterhouse designed Gatehouse when new oak doors where hung in their place.
Working with Donald Insall Associates (Cambridge), we implemented a scheme that allowed the college to have both the beauty of the iron gates and the protection from the elements that the oak affords!
The works involved:
- The careful study of the original documents to ensure the gates where installed as original.
- Preparation and decoration of the iron gates.
- Adaption and extending the oak gates.
- Manufacture of new wrought iron strap hinges.
