Gonville & Caius College - Waterhouse Building
Description
Following previous phases of work at the college it has been discovered that all the high level chimneys have been constructed with iron tie bars passing through every third course. The iron is now corroding and as a result the chimneys are becoming unstable. Rattee & Kett are dismantled the 2 large chimneys and rebuilt with stainless steel ties, incorporating new stones where required.
The works involved:
- The careful surveying, recording and dismantling of the existing stonework.
- Removing all retained stone off-site for storage.
- Rebuilding the masonry with new stones to match as required.
- Decoration and repair to the timber windows.
- Upgrading lightning protection.
